Blinken under pressure to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”

As thousands of Christians in Nigeria are murdered by Islamic jihadists every year, a coalition of more than 30 international rights groups and faith-based organizations wrote to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on September 19, asking him to re-designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” in regard to religious freedom violations, Church Leaders (CL) reports. The US annually reviews the status of religious freedom in every country in the world and designates each country that has tolerated “particularly severe violations of religious freedom” as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).

Nigeria number one in the world for jihadist murders of Christians

Nigeria ranked number one in the world last year for the number of Christians murdered by Islamic jihadists: 3,462 Nigerian Christians were slaughtered in what rights groups have described as a “killing field” for Christians. In its 2021 annual report, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) warned of a “Christian genocide” if the Nigerian government does not protect its Christian communities.

Nigeria: Christian leader hacked to death by Islamic extremists, one murder among thousands

Among nearly 4,000 Christians murdered by Islamic jihadists in Nigeria last year was Reverend Shuaibu Yohanna, who was hacked to death in September in the northeastern state of Kano, International Christian Concern (ICC) reported on Saturday. Nigeria ranked number one in the world last year for the number of Christians murdered on account of their faith.

Nigeria persecution: Congregation holds first service after vicious Fulani attack, thanks God for their lives

A Christian community in Nigeria’s Plateau state has held its first service since being attacked by Fulani jihadists in July, International Christian Concern (ICC) reports. The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Jebbu Miango gathered Sunday to thank God for sparing their lives during the attack which displaced 5,000 people.
